A strengthening Hurricane Ian鈥檚 rain and winds lashed Cuba鈥檚 western tip, where authorities have evacuated 50,000 people, as it became a major Category 3 storm early Tuesday.

Cuban voters have approved a sweeping 鈥渇amily law鈥� code that would allow same-sex couples to marry and adopt as well as redefining rights for children and grandparents. Official news media say the measure passed by 66.9% to 33.1% in an unusual national referendum. The reforms met unusually strong open resistance from the growing evangelical movement in Cuba.

Ian is forecast to become a hurricane Monday, as it moves north in the Caribbean.
