On a Zoom meeting, the coalition of legal entities and advocacy organizations called on the DeSantis administration to reconsider this week鈥檚 education change, which outright outlawed state colleges from enrolling undocumented students.

The policy change went through its first round of approvals on Thursday. This comes as the Department of Education will vote on banning undocumented students from public colleges and GED programs as well.

DHS officials did not say how many detainees were transferred or where they were taken. Nor did it say whether the facility would close permanently or only temporarily.

They have come from various churches and faith traditions in South Florida to hold "Freedom vigils" for nearly a year to pray and demonstrate against what they say are inhumane conditions inside the immigrant detention center.

Following a state-approved visit Tuesday to Alligator Alcatraz, U.S. Rep. Maxwell Alejandro Frost, a Democrat from Orlando, said he wants state and federal officials to disclose where remaining immigrant detainees are being transferred amid reported plans to permanently close the detention facility.

It鈥檚 the first installment of the $608 million FEMA grant Florida鈥檚 been waiting for since the detention center opened last summer.

Gov. Ron DeSantis on Thursday bashed Republican sheriffs and police chiefs for planning to urge the Trump administration to create a citizenship path for crime-free undocumented immigrants, calling the move 鈥渋ncoherent鈥� and ill-advised.

Last year, the state eliminated a tuition benefit that let students receive in-state tuition, regardless of their immigration status.

A Colombian legislator joined local clergy and immigrant advocates on Sunday in demanding Alligator Alcatraz be closed and detainees released to end what they describe as a "national and international" human rights crisis.

The measure also would create a rebuttable presumption that out-of-state non-citizens are responsible for car accidents.

Prolonged detention has become more common in President Donald Trump鈥檚 second term, at least partly because a new policy generally prohibits immigration judges from releasing detainees while their deportation cases wind through backlogged courts.

The Florida agency in charge of the 鈥淎lligator Alcatraz鈥� detention facility must release all texts, emails, and other communications with federal authorities about how the migrant center was set up and run, a Leon County judge ruled Tuesday.
