With hurricane season fast approaching, the administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency is urging Floridians to start making disaster plans now.

The Atlantic Hurricane season starts in June, but leaders at FEMA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration speaking at the National Hurricane Conference in Orlando say now is the time to start making preparations.

鈥淜now your risk,鈥 says FEMA director Deanne Criswell. 鈥淭ake the time today to understand what your risk is. Know what you鈥檙e going to do when you get a notification that you鈥檙e going to have to evacuate. Where are you going to go?鈥

Florida has seen a surge of new residents in recent years 鈥 people who might not have experienced hurricanes before.

鈥淚f you have not been in that situation before, there are a lot of resources out there,鈥 like Ready.Gov, she says. 鈥淭here鈥檚 a lot of information about the things that you can do to build that plan to protect your family.鈥

Knowing where you鈥檒l go if you need to evacuate, how you鈥檒l communicate with family, and establishing a long-term plan in case you can鈥檛 get back to your home are important preparations to make, she says.

Scientists at Colorado State University say this could be another above average hurricane season with a forecasted 19 storms. Of those storms, CSU scientists say nine could be named storms and four could be category three storms or stronger.
