Student Curators Bring Miami Art To Florida International University

This evening, academics and artists will meet to celebrate the closing reception of  at  the .

The exhibition isn't just an art show; it's a class with the honors college of Florida International University.

For the eighth consecutive year, non-art-major students worked together to curate an art exhibition. The student curators worked closely with ten local artists for about a year to open the third floor exhibit in February. Installations, paintings, photographs and performance pieces were carefully selected by the undergrads.

The students were guided by artist and professor , collaborator and friend of . The fundraising and organizing of the exhibit was the responsibility of his students.

Bailly is well known for saying that he is simply a bystander to the development of the exhibition. However, he used the fall 2012 semester to introduce his students to the art that South Florida had to offer them. The students traveled off campus to experience the , the , the  and the .

The class explored the Wynwood Art District together and stopped to speak with  at his gallery. They were able to pick his brain to better understand the business model behind art curation.

Aesthetics and Values goes by another name: Art As A Social Language. John Bailly centered his lectures around the idea that art can either change with society, or in itself change society.

That philosophy influenced how the students chose pieces for the exhibition. The cover of the Aesthetics and Values catalog is a work by Glexis Novoa. A drone is depicted smack in the middle of the piece, surrounded by hummers. Hummers, once being used only militarily, have become a part of everyday life. One can only assume what the glorified drone at the center of the piece symbolizes. To the students who selected the art, this speaks volumes on the idea of "art as a social language."

The event is open to the public.  Art lovers and the just-plain-curious are welcome to attend. There will be wine and cheese.
